5 Native Hawaiian Tropical Flowers and Plants at our Kihei Maui Resort

At The Hale Pau Hana Resort in Kihei Maui, there are many native maui flowers that grow in the area. For florists and hobbyists alike, knowing the names of these flowers can help with their own blogs or studies that they choose to undertake. Here we list five of the most common flowers and plants that bloom around our condo resort.

Here are five native hawaiian tropical flowers and plants that bloom around The Hale Pau Hana.

1. Plumeria Flowers

You’ll most likely smell these flowers before you see them, and we are lucky to have several plumeria trees swaying in the ocean breeze. A favorite of our guests, we often see them picking up fallen petals to decorate their lanais or tucking a bloom behind their ear. We suggest finding some locally made plumeria scented candles so you can take a little bit of paradise home with you!

2. Pele’s Fire (Goddess of Fire and Volcanoes)

There are a lot of Hawaiian legends, so many that even the plants are named after them! Like this one, aptly called Pele, with it’s colorful leaves that remind us of the goddess of fire, lightning, wind, dance, and volcanoes. The Haleakala National Park has some cultural significance around the story of Pele and the rumbling reminders of her island presence.

3. Bird of Paradise Flowers

An iconic and exotic flower, the Bird of Paradise is commonly used as a centerpiece in floral arrangements. But seeing one in the wild and in person is even better, especially when you have the ocean as a backdrop. Bird of paradise meanings include joyfulness, anticipation, and excitement — if you’re planning a trip to Maui we bet that you agree!

4. Hibiscus Flowers

So beloved is the hibiscus that the yellow variety is Hawaii’s official state flower. With delicate petals and only in full flower for about a day, seeing one in bloom a wonderful treat. They glow when lit up in the late afternoon sunshine, which also happens to be a perfect time to stroll the property with a cocktail. ;-)

5. Banana Tree Plants

Kids love to see their favorite fruit growing from a tree. Hanging in bunches among the thick foliage, they can be easy to miss. Keep an eye out during your next visit and try to spot them! For ripe ones to go in your morning smoothie, we recommend heading to a local farmers market in Kihei Maui.
