Hale Pau Hana Then and Now: Photographs from the Archive

A postcard, a photograph of the Tower and a view along the beach can bring back a particular visit. This collection pairs images from HPH's archive with guest photographs gathered for the original August 2022 article.

The dates below follow the labels in that original collection. The later photographs show the property around the time of the 2022 post; they are not a report of its condition today.

The property in a 1974 postcard

Look at the building outlines and the planting around them. A familiar shape can be easier to recognize than the details that have changed. The postcard below was paired with a later photograph by Rich Miller.

The lawn and loungers

The original article recalled shuffleboard on the grounds before that area became lawn. These two photographs show different moments in the property's history, with outdoor seating a familiar part of both.

The Tower

The Tower's curved shape is recognizable across the photographs. Compare the view of the building in the image labeled 1972 with the later photograph in the original collection.

The first image below was labeled 1969 in HPH's collection. The second was shared by Gitte Sandberg for the later comparison. Each captures the shoreline on a particular day.
