Hale Pau Hana Q&A: Frequent Guest and Amateur Photographer

In this 2022 interview, guest and amateur photographer Rich Miller talks about visiting Hale Pau Hana with his wife, Jen. At the time, they had returned every year since July 2015, apart from 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rich has shared many of the photographs used on our website and social media. The images below are from their May 2022 trip. His answers describe their visits at that time, rather than current travel or access advice.

How did you first learn about Hale Pau Hana?

We focused our research on places to stay that had very close access to the beach and ocean. Using Google maps to view the property was beneficial for sure.

What is it that keeps bringing you back?

The location is the number one reason for sure. Having access to the beach and ocean is what we enjoy most. In addition to that we enjoy the benefit of having a place to stay with a kitchen and outdoor grilling to save money on meal costs.

Do you have a favorite time of year to visit and why?

We typically visit in the summer because Jen is a high school teacher and has the extended time off during that time.

Your photography really captures the essence of what it’s like to be at Hale Pau Hana. Is photography a profession or just a hobby?

Thank you for the compliment. Just a hobby. I enjoy taking photos and sharing them with family, businesses and others via social media.

Do you have a favorite place or thing you like to photograph?

There is so much beauty on Maui so there is always something to photograph. Sunsets are our favorite, however.

What are your favorite things to do on Maui (other than spend time at Hale Pau Hana) or sites to see?

We have travelled all over the island. We have seen almost everything there is to see. The road to Hana front and back, Haleakala crater, the blowhole, Iao Valley, most of the great beaches including Red and Black Sand beaches, waterfalls, bamboo forests, rain forests, you name it.

What would you tell someone who’s coming to Hale Pau Hana for the first time what to expect?

We would tell them to cherish the visit. Enjoy every moment of it. Soak in the beautiful scenery and sunshine and just relax. Most importantly, never miss one of the amazingly beautiful sunsets.

Do you have a favorite memory at Hale Pau Hana?

Our best memories are the times we just float around in the ocean together enjoying the waves and the views all while watching the sea turtles swim by. There is nothing better than that!
