A piece of pottery, a small print or something made by an artist you met can be a useful reminder of a trip. For Maui shopping, start with the kind of work you would like to see and choose a few shops in the same area.

Start close to HPH: Kihei Kalama Village

Kihei Kalama Village's shop directory lists clothing, jewelry, gifts and other businesses at 1941 South Kihei Road. Each shop sets its own hours. Check the business you want to visit rather than using the center's general opening hours for every storefront.

Ask where an item was designed and made when local production matters to you. A Maui-themed design and an item made on Maui are not necessarily the same thing.

Meet different crafts through the Maui Crafts Guild

The Maui Crafts Guild lists its location at 120 Hāna Highway in Pāʻia. Its artist collective includes people working in ceramics, wood, jewelry, textiles, photography, glass and other media.

Look at the artist information alongside the work. Ask about materials, care and whether a piece can be packed for your journey. For larger or fragile purchases, discuss shipping before paying.

Make an Upcountry art visit

Hui Noʻeau Visual Arts Center is at 2841 Baldwin Avenue in Makawao. Its published visitor information includes exhibitions, grounds and a gallery shop with locally made gifts. Classes and events have their own booking arrangements.

Check what is on during your dates and allow time to look around. Do not assume a working artist is available for a demonstration whenever the shop is open.

Check market dates before going

Markets can be worth comparing when you enjoy browsing several makers in one stop. Check the organizer's latest date, location and admission arrangements. An old reopening announcement or vendor count is not a current schedule.

Bring home something you will enjoy

Before buying, check the dimensions, care instructions and return terms. A small work you have room to display can be a better choice than something difficult to pack. Keep the artist's name and receipt with the purchase.
