Vacations are all about relaxing. But after a few days soaking up the sun and sipping cocktails on your lanai, you’ll probably be ready to venture out! How about some shopping? This week we’ve rounded up where to find everything from locally crafted souvenirs for friends and family to that perfect piece of island art for your home. So pack light — you might need extra room in your suitcase!
Locals and visitors alike love this local flea-market. Held every Saturday since 1981, the Maui Swap Meet is set to reopen in May 2021 and with over 200 vendors you’ll see just about everything you’d expect — crafts, food, flowers, art, wood carvings — and probably some surprises! Get there early to beat the mid-day heat, and when you need a lunch break you’ll have plenty of food trucks to choose from.
Looking for gifts to bring home to your friends and family? There’s something for everyone at Kihei Kalama Village. This covered, open-air market is the perfect place to find locally crafted soaps, tee-shirts, pottery, jewelry, wall hangings, sundries, candles, and more. It’s just down the road from Hale Pau Hana so you can walk over after your morning swim!
Known for local, working artists and eclectic art, Makawao makes for a great day trip. Not only will you see incredible art, you can watch the artists at work and learn more about their craft and Hawaiian culture. Textiles, blown glass, and mixed media pieces are just a few of the treasures you’ll discover Upcountry.
Just down the road from Makawao you’ll come across Paia. Equal parts surfer and artist village, it’s where you’ll find the Maui Crafts Guild. While many stores and galleries on the island carry work from Hawaiian artists, the guild is exclusively Maui made. So if you’re looking to buy local, this is the place. And you won’t want to miss grabbing some tacos at Paia Fish Market before you head back to the beach!
Ready to bring some Maui home? If you’re looking for a painting to hang above the fireplace or a sculpture for the entryway, head to Lahaina. Stroll down Front Street for a selection of high-end galleries while taking in the gorgeous ocean views. Once you find that perfect piece, treat yourself to dinner at sunset.
Are you planning a visit to Hale Pau Hana? Check out our Activities page for more ideas of what to do around the island. Aloha, and we look forward to seeing you soon!
